Acoustic vs electric

Which one should you pick? Both if you can!

Sometimes, you will often hear teachers saying ‘you must learn on an acoustic’. This is absolutely not the case. They each have advantages and disadvantages but it all comes down to what you want to learn.

Acoustic is great for finger strength (steel string) but an electric is easier to build up finger strength quicker. If you want to play classical, gypsy jazz or Spanish guitar then you should probably pick a nylon string (although this isn’t a law, it’s just what everyone else does).

Electric guitar is the most versatile guitar. You can really make it your own, especially with all of the clever effects and amps around at the moment!

Put it this way, you’re not going to sound like Jimi Hendrix playing on a nylon string guitar – unless you are very good and reinvent a style!

We have absolutely no preference and don’t think that you should be forced into just one. Try both if that is an option for you and see which one you get a feel for.

Guitar lessons for beginners

Our guitar lessons are tailored for you. We do generally have a set out structure that we teach for beginners (unless you want to learn

in a different way).

We always recommend reading music when you learn. This is because it opens up so many opportunities when you continue playing. Plus there are very few guitarists it seems that can actually read music which always gives you an advantage!

Reading music allows you to have never heard a song, yet be able to play it due to looking at the notes and rhythm on a page.

For the first few weeks you will get to grips with the notes on the guitar and some very basic classical style pieces. We then teach you a few more notes on the staff and get you playing some basic scales.

After a few weeks of getting to grips with the guitar, we will start integrating what you have learnt into a popular song or two that you would like to play. This way you can learn the songs you want to play whilst still maintaining the correct techniques.

We can put you through grades if you like – this is recommended (even if you don’t take the exam it’s still useful). Grades allow you to gauge your progress and see how far away you are from mastering the guitar.

If you’d rather not learn music – that’s no problem either! Just let us know how you want to learn and we will tailor our lessons for you.

Guitar lessons for more experienced players

If you play the guitar already, you may want to refine your skills or break out of ‘the box’ a lot of guitarists get into. A common problem is guitarists being stuck in pentatonic scales – trust us, we have been through this problem too!

We can teach you exactly how (usually using a bit of theory) to break out of this shell.

If you are an experienced player and do want to progress further, please give us a call to discuss your requirements. Hopefully we can help!

Do I need to read music?

You never need to do anything when you play. You are playing for you, not for anyone else! We always recommend reading music – always! But we do not mind if you would rather learn by reading tab, or just by visually learning.

We find if you want to play more solo style guitar then music theory and notation really help. If you want to write songs, then sometimes it can actually hinder you!

Again, give us a call and have a chat. We always like to talk and we can help you decide the best route to go down.

Do you do grades?

Yes. Our lessons can cater from grade 1 – 8. If you already taking grades, please call us to discuss your requirements.

We can teach Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool or ABRSM – ask for details!

If you like the sound of us, please give us a call on 07541947686. We look forward to hearing from you.
